Size: 379㎜×288㎜ The Admiral Graf Spee was the third ship in the Deutschland class of armored ships. She was designed to get around the restrictions imposed by the treaty of Versailles, (that vessels be under 10,000 tons) nonetheless she was a powerful ship. She was named for the commander of the World War I German Pacific fleet, based at Tsingtao, Admiral Maximilian von Spee. Commissioned on January 6th 1936, she participated in the coronation review in honor of his Majesty King George the 6th in 1937. There she attracted attention along with the Japanese third ship of the Myoko class of heavy cruisers, the Ashigara, and the French battleship Dunkirk. Remarked upon because despite being of small size, she had powerful guns and strong armor, the class were nicknamed “pocket battleships”. At the outbreak of the Second World War, she South Atlantic and Indian oceans, she began commerce warfare operations, sinking many merchant ships. In December of 1939, using information from one of her captured merchant ships, it was deduced that she would be operating in the river Plate estuary. On December 13th, 1939, The British Navy sent Force G, consisting of the heavy cruiser Exeter, and the light cruisers Ajax and Achilles was sent to the river Plate estuary. In the following battle she was heavily damaged, and retreated in the neutral port of Montevideo in Uruguay. The port was quickly blockaded by British warships, so Captain Langsdorf decided have his crew interned and to scuttle his ship. This work shows the Admiral Graf Spee engaging in anti commerce warfare in the South Atlantic.
