At the core of his work lies the memorialization and commemoration of the fallen through the dedication of paintings. Many of his meticulously drawn monochrome pencil works depict Imperial Japanese Navy ships and aircraft. Sugano continues to dedicate and donate these works to the root shrines that shared the divine spirit with the shipboard shrines (shrine altars enshrined aboard ships for safe voyages and lasting military fortune), as well as other related facilities. A Sense of Mission and Passing on History Through his artistic work, he came to feel the breath of history and developed a strong sense of mission for this activity. It is a role to convey the facts of war, the living proof of the war dead, and the existence of the warships to future generations. He believes that by conveying historical facts as someone from a generation that did not experience war, he can shed light on the lives of the war dead and the history of Japan. This single-minded determination drives him to continue creating and dedicating his works. The “Portraits” Embodied in His Work Mr. Sugano states, “My pencil drawings of warships and aircraft are portraits of those vessels themselves, but they are also portraits of the officers and soldiers who served aboard them.” A major appeal of his work lies not only in the imposing presence of the ships depicted with great force, but also in the vivid portrayal of the crew members, rendered as small figures aboard the vessels.
